IMEI Number

What is IMEI number?
The IMEI number International Mobile Station Equipment Identity is a 15 digit number like (359223015426526) which is unique for every mobile phone.  It is to identify 3GPP (The 3rd Generation Partnership Project which is collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations, known as the Organizational Partners.) and some Satellite Phone.

Where you can find it?
The IMEI number is generally written below battery of mobile phone and also we can get IMEI number using this code *#06#, you just have to type this number from your keypad and it will automatically displays IMEI number of particular mobile phone. This code can be used in mostly all the mobile phones like Nokia, Samsung, Sony etc.
The IMEI number is used by GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) band to identify one’s mobile phone is genuinely made by the company. The IMEI number is very important and useful. As if you lost your mobile phone or your mobile phone is stolen then with the help of IMEI number your mobile phone can be traced very easily by Cyber Cell Officers. Even if anyone changes SIM (SUBSCRIBER IDENTITY MODULE) then also IMEI number remains the same. The IMEI number is only used to identify the device or say manufacturer of device like Nokia, Samsung, Sony, Micromax, Karbonn, HTC etc, these all have different IMEI numbers. As acknowledged in many countries using IMEI has reduced the effect of mobile theft. For example, as in United Kingdom according to Mobile Telephone Act, any modification in IMEI number is considered as an offense and a strong action can be taken against the person.

Structure of IMEI number
The IMEI number is a 15 digit number which consists of first 14 digit number and last digit is a Check Digit, and the check digit is calculated using Luhn Algorithm. The Check Digit helps guarding against the possibility of incorrect entries to the CEIR and EIR equipments. The check digit is not transmitted over the radio interface, nor is it stored in the EIR database at any point.
The check digit is validated in three steps:

  1. Starting from the right, double every other digit (e.g., 7 → 14)
  2. Sum the digits (e.g., 14 → 1 + 4).
  3. Check if the sum is divisible by 10.

Even all Satellite Phone uses a unique IMEI number on their transceiver units as well as SIM cards like you use in GSM Mobile Phones.
